From Me to You, the Individual

For most of my ministry I have enjoyed the opportunity and responsibility of writing a weekly column, weakly sometimes, I’ll admit, but sometimes pretty well.  Since our newsletter went monthly, however, I have missed my regular visits to the keyboard.  So, enter this blog.  Our new website has offered me an opportunity once more to spend time arranging words on a page (electronic, yes, but a page nonetheless), and I will gladly do so.  After all, what the world really needs is one more preacher with one more blog.

I know I’m a little behind the curve on this—now that I’m blogging, most people have moved on to Tweeting—but give me time; I’ll eventually catch up [Let me give this a try.  “What am I doing?”  I’m writing a blog entry, gaining weight, getting older, pondering my mortality, and wondering why a million people would want to know what Ashton Kutcher is doing—all at the same time.]

How will my entries here differ from the old columns I used to write?  Probably not that much, though I might just aim a little higher this time around.  I think I’ll take the attitude assumed by so many letter-writers back in my days at the Wesleyan Christian Advocate (RIP), namely, “This should settle that.”  It’s amazing how many “final words” can be offered on a topic like “homosexuality and the church.”  That one got settled pretty much every week.  But I’m REALLY going to settle things.  Have a controversy or topic dear to your heart?  A question that has nagged at you for far too long?  Watch this space.  I will soon have you nodding your head and saying, “Of course!”

Or maybe you’ll be nodding off, but, either way, I hope you’ll visit this page from time to time.  Because all I am really doing is writing to you.  On Sunday, when I preach, you are plural, but here it’s just you, an individual (If Soren Kierkegaard could address his works to “the individual,” so can I).  All that is happening really is that you and I are meeting here for a few moments, and I’m sharing some thoughts, and then, if it’s worth your time, you can reply with a few thoughts of your own.  That’s how it works, I’m told.  It’s called communication, an interesting concept.
